April Showers Bring May Flowers … And Buyers

Based on realtor.com®’s recently released Active Spring Home Shoppers Report, bigger is not better when it comes to desirable homes on the market during this peak homebuying season. After looking at purchasing goals, desirable features and particular rooms that shoppers have their eyes set on when browsing for potential dream homes, realtor.com suggests that sellers zoom in on key areas if they’re looking to list or wanting to make wise updates that’ll help their home’s value in the long run.

Here are some key takeaways from the report to get in the mindset of this season’s homebuyers and to help you evaluate your home’s major assets:

Buyers Like Shiny Things

Splurging on that double-pro, stainless steel Viking range was totally worth it. While respondents did not agree on most things (jury’s still out if Craftsmen or colonials are better) one thing was clear: they love impressive kitchens. 80% of active spring home shoppers ranked the kitchen as one of the top three most important spaces (followed by the master bedroom and living room at 49% and 42%, respectively). So make sure you’re investing in kitchen upgrades that hold up over time, or consider budget-friendly projects that’ll give your space a fresh look-and-feel.

They’re Keen on Green

Large yards were favored among everyone, from families with young children to home seekers ages 55 and up. However, even though homeowners across the board like the idea of having a green space of their own, it seems an unfortunate phenomenon that they rarely use it once owned. The solution? Maximize your yard’s usable space by creating an intentional “outdoor room” that’ll give you a reason to spend time in your own custom outdoors. This makes your space more inviting to future homebuyers and appeals to active kids and relaxation-seeking adults alike.

Keep Your Garage Band Alive

Your garage might just be your home’s biggest value add, especially to shoppers ages 55 and up who surprisingly prefer having a garage over a living room when it came to most important spaces in their home. So don’t think of your garage as a waste of space. A spruced-up garage can be your home’s treasure trove.

Sorry, Guys

When making the big purchase, potential buyers reported they could do without a “man cave” in the search for their next home. To the disappointment of gentlemen everywhere, designated man caves came in as the least important room for active home shoppers searching this spring. So if you’re a gentleman who loves your man cave (or partnered with someone who loves his man cave) consider staging it in a way that opens up the space to other possibilities, such as using it as a guest room or home office.
