Property Description for 23520 Church

CHURCH STREET HOUSE c. 1850, one of the oldest homes in Plaquemine, has been a stately landmark for over 150 years. Located in the Historic District and listed on the National Register, this home sits directly across the street from the historic St. Basil's Academy and is a short walk from St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Iberville Parish Museum, First United Methodist Church, and the Plaquemine Locks. Home is a Louisiana raised cottage with a raised wrap-around porch featuring hand-hewn cypress columns and working louvered shutters. The home is constructed of native cypress and contains some of the original glass windows, fireplaces, as well as some antique furnishings dating to original families. Home was enlarged in 1899 and 1920 and completely renovated in 1989. A charming carriage house/washhouse with its original slate roof still stands on the property. Unique oval side and transom lights frame the antique leaded and beveled glass front door which welcomes visitors into the foyer and central hall of the home. A formal archway connects the hallway with the glassed in rear porch which stretches across the back of the home and overlooks backyard and saltwater lap pool. To the right of the foyer is the parlor which is graced by a beautiful crystal chandelier purchased at the St. Louis World Fair and Exposition at the turn of the 19th/20th century. A marble mantel imported from New Orleans frames the fireplace and large floor to ceiling windows open to the side portion of the wraparound porch. The parlor opens to the formal dining room through a large columned archway. Dining room features 1 of 2 original gas light fixtures which has been converted to electric light. Just off the dining room is a small den which served the original owner as a doctor's office. To the left of the foyer is the library (an original bedroom) which features built-in book cases, one of the home’s four fireplaces and an original gas light fixture. The kitchen has been updated
