Shattering Stereotypes

700+ Athletes Take to the Courts this Weekend at Special Olympics Virginia's Potomac Region Basketball Tournament, Feb. 12 in Arlington & Fairfax counties

We won’t be shattering backboards this weekend, but we will be shattering stereotypes and making plays when more than 700 athletes with and without disabilities from across Northern Virginia take to the hardcourts in Arlington and Fairfax counties for Special Olympics Virginia’s Potomac Region Basketball Tournament, February 12. The tournament, which runs from 9 am to 6 pm, features full court and half court games and, for the second year in Northern Virginia, unified basketball teams from Canterbury Woods Elementary School, Kenmore Middle School, Langley High School, Robert Frost Middle School, Robert E. Lee High School, Robinson Secondary School, South County Middle School and Yorktown High School will compete as part of our Unified Sports® program. The program, which pairs students with and without disabilities on the same team, is aimed at building the first unified generation - a generation where youth will build upon the friendships and life lessons learned through sports and the Special Olympics movement so, later in life, they will not be afraid to live, work and THRIVE alongside their peers with different ability levels. Sunday’s competitions take place at five Arlington and Fairfax area middle schools. Seventy local teams from Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun are on the rosters. In addition, more than 100 local volunteers from ENGEL & VÖLKERS will be assisting with everything from registration to refereeing. "Our life success began when we became ONE with Special Olympics,” said ENGEL & VÖLKERS’ Julie Brodie. The Potomac Region Basketball Tournament, hosted by ENGEL & VÖLKERS with additional support from Hoops Plus, is one of many events offered year round by Special Olympics Virginia. The event is free and open to the public. Media are welcome to attend. For more information on local teams or team schedules, please contact Veronica Jennings at or visit
